6. Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a type of treatment recommended to relieve symptoms of menopause and address long-term biological alterations such as bone loss. However, it is now known that it can impact breast cancer risk. The therapy mimics exposure to hormones and the combination of estrogen and progesterone or taking estrogen alone for many years can be harmful. Regarding the risk of HRT, the National Cancer Institutes (NCI) report to two studies and explain that “women who took estrogen plus progestin were more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. The breast cancers in these women were larger and more likely to have spread to the lymph nodes by the time they were diagnosed. The number of breast cancers in this group of women increased with the length of time that they took the hormones and decreased after they stopped taking the hormones.”
