There are different dimensions of the treatment for breast cancer, and often patients require more than just physical treatment. Coping with breast cancer is emotionally demanding and numerous organizations offer support and resources for patients to address this problem. Girls Love Mail is one of these organizations and its work is completely original. Girls Love Mail focuses on sending hand-written and touching letters to encourage breast cancer patients.

Founded in August 2011 by Gina L. Mulligan, the non-profit organization has already been responsible for letters sent to 63,000 women at 152 different centers across America. “Letters are sacred mementos we lovingly save in decorative boxes. Yet the gentle beauty of a hand-written letter seems hidden in our age of text messages and emails. After working for five years on a novel comprised entirely of letters, I felt connected to what I consider the lost art of letter writing,” explained the founder.

“However, not until I was diagnosed with breast cancer did I understand that a few words on paper were more than just a keepsake. A hand-written letter is a gift with the ultimate power to heal.” Mulligan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. During the time of her treatment, she received letters from friends and family with their best wishes, which she thought was very touching and helpful in her recovery.

Mulligan won her battle against breast cancer two years later, and right after she decided to share with others what had helped her. Therefore, she recruited volunteers who went to her house and wrote letters to breast cancer patients, which she then delivered at local California cancer centers. Now, she continues with the project with the purpose of encouraging women to fight the disease. Everyone is invited to participate and write letters to share with breast cancer patients.

“A hand-written letter has the special power to heal. Girls Love Mail collects your hand-written letters of encouragement, bundles them, and sends them, via the caring staff at cancer centers and programs, to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Every letter is a gift from you to a woman going through a difficult time. Anyone can write a letter!,” state the organization.

“All it takes is a little of your time and the cost of a postage stamp to help a woman newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Won’t you Join Us and share your kind words in a letter!” In addition, Girls Love Mail has recently started a campaign called 2016 Miles of Mail, which aims to collect 26,000 letters during the course of the year. At this point, 7,634 letters were already collected. Find out more about the campaign here.
